Steven Tyler was born to Mary Patricia (née Tyler; February 23, 1950) and Melvin Edward Tyler on March 26, 1952, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He attended DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx, New York City. While still in high school he met future bandmate Joe Perry. Tyler dropped out of school during his senior year to play with Aerosmith.
The band had their first hit with the song "Dream Girl" in 1970, which reached number 21 on the "Billboard" Hot 100 chart.
The same year they opened for Elvis Presley on one of his last concerts at Madison Square Garden.
Tyler formed Aerosmith in 1971 shortly after leaving New York's famed Academy of Music. Initially playing small clubs around Boston and New York City, the band later became popular playing large arenas across America including The Capital Centre in Washington, D.C., which was the largest indoor arena west of Chicago at the time of construction. The band's first two albums were released within a one-month span in 1973, with their third album following three months later.
With their fourth album "Get Your Wings" released in 1974, the band received their first Gold record award for sales exceeding 500,000 copies
Aerosmith's fifth album "Permanent Vacation" was released in December 1975 and became the band's breakthrough hit on both coasts. It reached #2 on both Billboard's Top Rock Albums chart and Top Pop Catalog Albums chart, as well as #28 on the British pop chart. It would be their last album to make it into the Top 40 until Draw the Line was released 18 years later in 1999.
They have since become one of rock music's most successful bands with 17 consecutive Top 10 albums on Billboard's mainstream rock charts including five No. 1 albums - Toys In The Attic (1987), Pump (1989), Get a Grip (1993), Crazy Nights (1995) and Music From Another Dimension!!!
